Uh, no that doesn’t happen. If the plane hasn’t actually left the gate, they’ll still check you in and chances are they will hold the plane. I’ve been in the same circumstance and was loaded onto one of those electric carts and moved to the front of the security line. They only had to hold the plane for like 2 minutes. Another time I got to the boarding gate after they had closed it, but the plane had not departed and they opened it up.

That said I understand the circumstances. Also different, countries, airlines, bitchy airline personnel etc.
Once the plane was held down on the ground for almost an hour for my sister, because it was so packed, she was in line for a long time from her arriving flight, this was a stop in-between. They had to pull her out of the line, get her through the customs of one plane and then through those of the other to get on the new plane. She told how the people in the plane wasn’t too happy when she finally got in.
This is actually based on a personal experience. The airline my sister picked insisted everyone check in 45 minutes beforehand. We showed up five minutes late (bus troubles) and they refused to let us through, despite the fact that boarding would not begin for another ten minutes.
We’ve all been there! (or know people who have!)
Panel 4: Another … what?
